Environmental modifications
Each environment presents different advantages and challenges to young people with cognitive differences. Each child is different, and each delay or disability will require different modifications. Environmental Behaviour Modification identifies environmental factors that impact on quality of life or intensity of impairment. Treatments involve changing the environment to increase optimum function/desirable behaviours and reduce impairment/undesirable behaviours. These techniques can be used at home or in school settings and are individually specified to enable the young person to function with greater independence.
Examples of environmental modifications include: changing the layout of a room, modifying materials or equipment, differentiating a task in terms of duration or difficulty, and providing special equipment.
