Specialist Psychology Associates see children and young people who have experienced an injury to their brain, have a medical or neuro-developmental condition that may affect brain functioning or have difficulties with learning.
The condition may be one that they have been born with (neuro-developmental disorder, metabolic disorder, genetic disorder, hemiplegia); or may have arisen from an accident (head injury), psychiatric condition (psychosis, eating disorder) or medical condition (epilepsy, brain tumour, stroke, liver disease).
Most of the young people we see also have emotional and/or behavioural concerns associated with the physical changes to their brain or a consequence of adapting to changes in their abilities. Some children have no diagnosis but experience difficulties with learning that affect their self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and behaviour.
Assessment and diagnosis are fundamental to being able to recommend appropriate treatment and/or strategies for coping better with the relevant condition and ensuring the patient has the best opportunities in life going forward.
