Cognitive behavioural therapy

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy used to treat social skill deficits and disorders such as depression, anxiety, anger, PTSD and other psychiatric and psychological difficulties. CBT is concerned with how people’s behaviour is shaped by their interpretation and perception of their experience.

It aims at assisting the young person in understanding the link between beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and behaviour and involves identifying irrational and distorted thoughts that interfere with a desired outcome in life and learning to replace them with realistic and helpful thoughts.

New learning and planned steps to accomplish desired behaviour change are developed with the young person. The Effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy with young people who have a brain is dependent upon the individual’s age and level of cognitive functioning.
